My family and I went to visit the Midway while visiting my sister in San Diego. What an emotional visit! So may fun memories from family cruises, visiting my dad in the OZ division offices, father/daughter dances, etc. Thought I would post our reunion picture. Left to right are my younger sister Maggie Lesley, me (with my son), my father Ron Lesley, my daughter and my mom Debbie Lesley. I recommend making the trek if you can.

Aloha everyone! I know, I know, it's been sooo long since our last update! We've been super busy after the reunion and tryin' to live our lives. But we're still here. We've gotten a few new members to the blog (which reminds me, I still need to add onto the sidebar...) Anyhow, if you're still following us, thanks as always! Please feel free to continue to post on the blog and update us with your life. I know everyone has a Facebook page and that's one of the main reason our dear ole blog has been sadly neglected. But I thought I'd stop on by to report we'll be having a mini reunion sometime this year. It's going to be a very informal reunion. Please check back from time to time on the reunion updates. Yokosuka Pictures

My brother Froy and I were fortunate enough to accompany my husband back to Yokosuka this spring. It has changed so much. It's definitely not the same Yokosuka we remember. However it was great being back and reliving our childhood memories as we walked around the base.

This was in San Diego on Sunday 11/4. Classes represented were 84,85,86 and 88!!! Woo hooo. We had a late lunch at Buca Di Beppo in Mira Mesa. Lots of fun. Here are the pix's!

Hey everyone! Wanted to post pix from a mini reunion that we had on sunday 9/9 with the Paulino's (Sandra 86' and Peter 85'), Lynn Dizon 86' and myself. I had not seen the Paulino's since they left Yoko back in 83'. Also Lynn who I had not seen for about 9 years or so. It was so great to see all of them again after so many years. All are married with children with the exception of me. We talked about the good ole days and how life is now for everyone. They all miss living in Yoko and want to go back for a visit. I believe that to be the sentiment for anyone who attended Yo-hi and lived in yoko. I think the water in Yoko did wonders for all of us. As you can see everyone looked great as does others who attended the reunion or posted their now pix!!! We may have aged in years but not in looks. Lica 86'

Where did everybody go? All of a sudden, once the reunion was over everyone just leaves this blog alone? C'mon people! :)

For those of us who couldn't make it to the reunion give us a recap!!! Just 'cause we couldn't make it doesn't mean we didn't want to go. What happened on the Midway? What happened at the park the day after? Pictures are great, and yeah, they do speak the proverbial thousand words, but give the rest of us something to smile and reminisce about too!

There are approximately 5 tickets still available to purchase. First come, first serve.

Midway:
The dress attire at the Midway is semi-formal to the point of whatever makes you comfortable. We want you to be comfortable but at the same time this is a sit-down banquet. :)
(...casually semi-formal might be a good way to put it...)

Luau:
Due to safety reasons, please no pets at the park, unless the pets are kept in a seperate area. Thank you.

This is at a park location so please bring your lawn chairs or blankets to get comfy. If you have extra, please bring those to help out the out-of-towners.
Also, if you would like to bring any outdoor activities as well. Volleyball, football, etc.

Reunion Information

Hi all! Reunion coming up in just a couple of days! Hope to see you all there!

Midway Parking:
The parking lot that is at the Midway pier is not run by the Midway so it is public parking. Friday night there is a Padres baseball game that starts at 7:05pm. The baseball stadium is not that far from the Midway. I suggest carpooling or trying to get there as early as possible to avoid having to park far. The parking at the pier also cost approximately $8 for the night. There is metered parking on the outskirts of the pier that is free after 6pm, however, those might be taken from the baseball fans. Please plan on being on the Midway no later than 6:30pm to be able to sign in and get situated.

For all out-of-towners, San Diego's weather has been hot and sunny as usual. Most likely a summery short sleeved shirt/blouse will do on the Midway. However, as we are literally on the water, it does tend to get a little breezy and nippy once the sun sets. I suggest dressing in layers or bring a light jacket/sweater that you can add once the night kicks in, in case needed. You also do not want to die of heat before the sun sets. :)

There will be a cash bar (again, carpooling would be nice!).

Reunion Tickets Extension--Last chance to get your tickets

After over a year of planning, the 2007 YOHI Reunion is almost here! We, especially the committee members, are excited that it is finally here and everyone is looking forward to seeing and reconnecting with people that some haven't seen since Japan. This promises to be a memorable reunion with classmates from all over the nation and the world in attendance. Other than the great menu we will be having, we will have a bar and fun and entertaining activities planned as well.

Although ticket sales have ended, many of you have contacted us regarding being able to purchase your tickets for the 2007 YOHI Reunion. The USS Midway and caterer have allowed us to extend our deadline, however it is a very short window. If you are interested in attending the reunion, please purchase your tickets by Monday, July 9, 2007. Please don't delay in purchasing your tickets. Ticket cost is $185 for the banquet on the USS Midway on Friday, July 20, 2007 and the luau on Saturday, July 21, 2007. Please note that there will be a master checklist of attendees upon boarding the USS Midway and at the luau so please ensure that you check in upon arrival. Tickets will not be sold at the door. You can purchase your tickets here.

Parking Advisory

The Port of San Diego recently began an 18-month reconstruction of Midway's Navy Pier. The museum will remain open during construction however parking on Navy Pier may be periodically limited. Alternate parking can be found at the Five Star Lane Field Parking Lot at the corner of W. Broadway and Pacific Coast Highway.

It is a short 2 block walk to Navy Pier and the Midway. Just walk one block west to the waterfront and then one block south to Navy Pier. Street metered parking is also available throughout the area.

Map - Midway is located at 910. N Harbor Drive, San Diego, California, 92101, alongside Navy Pier.

Parking on Navy Pier (limited during pier construction) -

$5 up to 1 hour
$7 for up to 4 hours
$10 for up to 10 hours
$12 for up to 12 hours

Handicapped Parking - on Navy Pier (near the Ticket Office) is available on a first-come-first-served basis, standard parking rates apply.

Metered Parking - limited along N. Harbor Drive and Pacific Coast Highway at a rate of 25¢ for 12 minutes. Most meters having a 2 hour limit.

With the Santa Fe Depot just a few blocks away, the Midway is easily accessible by train, coaster, and trolley.

Ticket cost is $185.

The 2007 YOHI Reunion will be a two-day event. First day Friday, July 20, 2007 will be held onboard the USS MIDWAY from 6:30 pm - 11:00 pm. And the second day will be a Luau (fully catered, live entertainment and games for the whole family) from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.

It has come to our attention that some of you have some questions and concerns regarding our upcoming 2007 Reunion. Here are a few FAQ that we've gotten and answers we hope will help you understand all that goes into planning this reunion and why some of the decisions were made. If none of your questions or concerns are address, please email one of the organizers and we'll be more than happy to answer your questions. (This will always be on the Reunion Blog so if you can't find it here, please check the YoHi Reunion site)

* When and who can attend the 2007 YOHI Reunion?

The reunion will be held on July 20, 2007 and is open to everyone and anyone who lived in Yokosuka, attended Sullivan and Kinnick to reminisce with not just their close friends during that time but with others who shared the same experiences at YOHI as well.

* Why isn't the 2007 YOHI Reunion like the 2000 YOHI Reunion in the Park?

The 2000 YOHI Reunion in the Park Picnic was a great success but it was suggested by many of the reunion attendees to have the next reunion be more than just a one-day event especially because there were some alums in attendance who traveled from a far as Japan to be at a picnic. We kept that suggestion in mind and decided to make it a two-day catered event to have more time to enjoy and reminisce with people who some haven't seen each other since living in Japan.

We've realized that by organizing a reunion of this magnitude, we cannot please everyone. With that thought in mind, we feel that if alums are interested in having a "unique and memorable" reunion experience rather than having a cookout with the same old crew, then they will do what they can to attend the reunion we have planned and share in this experience especially since reunion plans were announced in December 2005, more than a year in advance.

* Why is the reunion in San Diego, CA and being held onboard the USS Midway and not a hotel somewhere else?

Instead of holding the reunion at a regular hotel as is commonly done, we wanted to make the 2007 YOHI Reunion a unique and memorable experience. We decided to have it onboard the USS Midway since this U.S. carrier was home-ported in Yokosuka, Japan for over a decade. Having the reunion on the USS Midway alone is, as you can imagine, a bit costly but well worth it to have something nostalgic added to the unique reunion experience.

Also, we selected to have the reunion in the San Diego area because we realize that alot of YOHI Alums live in California. Decisions made for the reunion are based on the majority. We've accommodated the majority by having it in San Diego so the only thing they would have to pay for is the ticket cost to attend the Banquet and luau. Out-of-towners, like myself and 2 other reunion committee members and our families included, will have to pay the ticket cost, hotel, airfare, etc. We were hoping that since we are accommodating YOHI Alums located in California that they would be the ones to step up and volunteer to help more.

* Why do the kids' ticket cost the same as the adults' ticket cost for the Reunion Banquet onboard the USS Midway?

Kids prices are almost the same cost as the adults prices for the USS Midway because the USS Midway charge the same for everyone attending...it's the caterer's that give a little discount on the kids prices. We recommend not bringing your kids to the Midway but definitely to the Luau especially if the cost of the kids' ticket is a major factor for you. There will be children in attendance at the banquet but several individuals have notified us that they will be bringing their kids to the luau and not the banquet.

* What does the cost of the reunion entail?

Keep in mind, that we are not an organization that collects dues throughout the year (like alumni association fees) and have funds available specifically for this type of event. All funds collected thus far are from ticket sales.

We've also established a store on Cafe Press to purchase YOHI & YOHI Reunion memorabilia to help keep the cost down, and it's up to you and all our classmates to support it, as ALL profits will go towards the reunion.

We cannot do this reunion on our own and desperately need the help of our fellow classmates to make it a success, so without your help, then it's necessary to "hire" the help. Which of course means higher cost in ticket prices.

We'd like to now personally thank people who have helped us lower our cost by volunteering their services to us for free or at a very low price. Thanks to George Bernabe and Mary Forrest (both from class of 88) for volunteering to be our professional photographers at the events. Thanks to Sam Simbulan (Class of 88)for volunteering to create the video montage to be presented at the Reunion Banquet. Thanks to Warren Valbuena (Class of 88) for his connection for the DJ who will provide music entertainment for the banquet.

It's that time again...

Hey all!

I had a bit of a "flash back" this afternoon. Tomorrow is my first basketball scrimmage as the head coach. As I had 21 young ladies circled at 1/2 court asking them about how they were feeling about our scrimmage tomorrow, I found myself beginning to talk about the first basketball scrimmages that I participated in my junior and senior years. I remember going to play the japanese all-star team somewhere off base... getting to eat teriyaki burgers before we played... the giant picture before we played... and then getting our butts kicked by 40 points. That was a tough year... And then my senior year (90) hitting a 1/2 court shot at the buzzer. It was a scrimmage, but it was the coolest thing ever. I remember that I was tired of practicing and wanting to get the games going. Remember all of those long trips that we had to take as athletes? 1 1/2 to 2 hours long! Kinda' spoiled with my 20 minute to 45 minute trips across town. I mentioned to my girls that they will look back and remember this time and wish that they could do it again... Great memories and just wish that you could do it again. But those are the things that I remembered today, and just wanted to share those. Only been 16 years or so... amazing isn't it? BTW... my high school basketball jersey hangs on my wall in my classroom. Sadly enough... there's NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO way that I could fit into it now. How on earth did I ever fit into it? Guess it's called 12 years of healthy married life and 2 kids! :-)

Everything changed but the scenery! That was always one constant. Well, the other constant was that I always felt "pretty" when they would put make up on us. Did I say that out loud. Before I left I was promoted to bamboo clapper in the Singkil dance. Oh yeah, I definitely thought I made it. It was bonus that "uber hottie" Maribel Reyes (spelling unsure) was the queen of that dance! I have no proof of those good times.

I do have proof of some of the other dances that we would participate in. Unfortunately, for you girls out there, I don't have any of Paul and Barry Villegas doing the Igorot Dance.

My wife and I just moved into our new house and I came across these pictures that were in a box that I hadn't opened in years. I believe this was C/O 92's 4th, 5th and 6th years at Sullivans Elementary. I don't remember any of the teachers names or even a lot of the kids.
