Favorite foods and places to eat: Sushi Pier 2 here in Reno.

Have you ever returned to Japan, if so what do you think of it now? I haven’t been to Japan since the summer or 89. My brother will be stationed in Okinawa this summer so hopefully I’ll be able to go back there soon.

Jody, The corn dog place across from the base is Honey Bee. I liked their corn dogs but I loved their soft serve. It's still there I believe, at least it was when I was back home in 2001.

I agree with you Jody, I owe Mr. Bibbs a major apology. At least I don't owe him any fish.

Jody, I have Ron and Rodrigo's emails if you want and I still keep in touch with Bonnie (Millie's sister) too. I invited them to join this blog so hopefully they'll pop up soon. The last time I saw Paulanne was in Hawaii (I left in '03), but I'm sure I have her number somewhere.

Yuria,

I remember Nancy Berry. She was at Jacksonville, Florida when I met her. It was around 1985 when we left Japan and got stationed in Florida. I was at Rodrigo Eugeno's house when I saw her so she can see the 85 year book. I don't know where she is now but I just thought I'd let you know...

Hi Mariesol, I don't know if I know you. Your name sounds so familiar, and the friends you used to have were my friends, too. Were you ever in any of my classes? I used to hang out with Jocelyn Galang and Jennifer Lauzon way back in elementary, and Anna Lynn Gerales was my bestest friend from the Philippines. I actually still keep in touch with Anna Lynn. She lives here in California, married with one daughter, who has the same birthday as me!! If you ever talk to Jocelyn, tell her I said hi. I don't know if she remembers me. If you look at the blog from February, I posted a picture from 1st grade (Ms. Hoye) and 6th grade (Ms. Kunze). You might see some familiar faces. Anyways, post a picture of yourself (old and new) so I could see if I recognize you.

Hi Aya! It's been a long time! I wish I had some pictures to post of me way back when, but I don't have them here. Just check out my myspace page...it's jam-packed with current photos. Hopefully you'll find one of me. Anyway, we all used to hang out at that temple-looking thing near your house. Remember, it had a long rope? Not sure if we were in any classes together, though. If you speak with AnnaLynn tell her I said "hello" as well! I would love to hear from her. I'm glad to know she's doing great. Jocelyn and I were in San Diego last August. It would have been great to see you guys had we known you all were in the area! Definitely looking forward to the reunion! -M

1. Name: Tom Mills

2. Class Year: 1988

3. No. of years you lived in Japan: Many... I would say about 13 or so years.

4. Favorite/worst memories: Seeing as though half my extended family lives in Japan, there are too many favorite memories to recount. I also can't seem to recall any memory that would qualify as a "worse" memory... perhaps my initial shock at finding out about the move to the Philippines in the middle of sophomore year? Of course, I ended up having a blast in the Philippines too...

5. Favorite hang out: Who knows...

6. Who did you hang out with? Allan Torres, Bobby Haley, Mike Parramore, Alonzo Rexroat, Gary Ellington, Marc Smith, Math-yu Lee... pretty much with band folks.

7. Favorite Teacher: Gary Starrine, who I've come to find out still teachers there according to my brother James (James is a navy JAG stationed in Yokosuka right now).

8. What were you known for in school (clown, brain, etc.): I think a majority of you would have classified myself as a band geek at the time, and a relatively uknown one at that. I'm still quite perplexed as to the relevancy of classifying people, but I suppose it's an inherently human need to classify and categorize. I guess it helps us comprehend and put things into context?

9. Where did you live?/Where do you live now?: I lived in a variety of places, but during my tenure at Yo-Hi I lived at 1 Spruance Court (at the bottom of the weather station hill) and currently reside in the booming suburban paradise of Brandywine, Maryland (in Prince Georges County, even!).

10. Married, single, kids, pets? Husband of one and father of two (Tommy and Sean). We also have one dog (Molly, our big ass English Mastiff), and a pair of Solomon Island Eclectus Parrots (Samantha and Shamrock). We don't count the dust mites and mosquitos as pets.

11. Interests/hobbies: Photography!!! I still have my father's old (I'm sure he appreciates me calling the camera "old") Nikkormat FTn, and it still works like a charm, even the metering is still dead on. I also like writing (albeit I haven't been published or recognized for any writing whatsoever), reading and a whole littany of other things (okay, maybe not).

12. Favorite foods and places to eat: I obviously have a particular fondness for Japanese food, especially the fried variety, and I don't really have a favorite place to eat (most anyplace that serves food will do). I DO however really enjoy the Bass Ale on tap at the Old Ebbit Grill and the variety of beer selections at The Ram's Head in Annapolis, the Brickskellar in DC, and at RFD's downtown (they serve Boddington's on tap... yummy!).

13. Have you ever returned to Japan, if so what do you think of it now? My first duty station after graduation and commissioning from The Boat School in Annapolis was in Yokosuka, onboard the now decommissioned USS HEWITT (DD 966). Yokosuka had changed a bit during my tenure onboard USS HEWITT (DD 966), but I can only imagine that it has changed MUCH more now. I don't know why I always feel the need to add the (DD 966) when referencing the ship, or why I always write USS HEWITT in CAPS. Old habits die hard, I suppose. Currently planning on making a trip back "home" this summer.

14. Ever have a job back then/what do you do now? I did not work in high school and I'm currently a management consultant, whatever that means. I also blog here and here - both are much more fun than being a management consultant (or conslutant, whichever you prefer).

15. Anyone in particular you would like to get in touch with? It's been so long since I've corresponded with anyone from high school (either Yo-Hi, or my alma mater, George Dewey High School), so I really don't know that there is any particular person I would like to get in touch with. It's just good to reminisce, I suppose.

16. What do you want to see more on the blog? Not quite sure, although I'd be the first to admit that I do NOT have a vast repository of pictures from ages past. That said, it's interesting to see the images from long ago (the word here might be natsukashi).

17. Do you think you'll be able to make the reunion?/Suggestions for reunion? It appears as though reunion plans have already been made in San Diego, onboard the former USS MIDWAY (CV 41). Given the fact that a preponderance of alumni seem to reside on the west coast, it's probably a good idea. Not quite sure if I would make it, but it's worth giving it a go!

I tend to agree with Mary's sentiments about questionnaires like this, but I do suppose it's an easy way to collect "pertinent" information on people. Unlike Mary, however, I'd say that I am as boring as my responses to this questionnaire.
