i think i would've been on that championship team if i didn't leave on my junior year. you know how much that sucked for me when i saw the article back in the states a few months later? damn! it's all good...we needed a championship that's for sure.

Yeah, imagine the emotion when we finally beat our arch nemesis Yokota for the first time...and on a night game at that! We thought at first it would be same old-same old when they scored on the opening kick-off. But no...that was the first and only touchdown they would get. The score got run up something like 46-7 (please correct me with the right score if any of you remember it). Revenge was so sweet after years of lopsided losses. It was so amazing to see them on FEN (remember FEN???) a few weeks later saying that they "Want YO-HI". I gotta give props to our football team. It was a beautiful season.

Yeah I remember that game against Yokota. It was Yo-Hi's first night game. Yokota scored like a 40 yard run on their very first play from scrimmage. After that touchdown it was like...oh no, here we go again. But it turns out, it would be all Devils from there. I was on that championship team, but I don't really consider myself a contributor that year. First I came in that year out of shape. I still ended up starting at linebacker and backup fullback but then we had the preseason scrimmage. During the scrimmage, I was on offense and I carried the ball and got tackled. I injured my ankle and my leg turned blue from my foot to my knee. I missed the first three games but was back for the fourth game when we played at Zama. I was, however, a backup linebacker and no longer playing fullback. I sucked so bad that game...I guess psychologically I was not into it. The following week coach switched me to offensive guard. I was completely clueless at that position. I played a little bit at offensive guard during the next game. Then I played more the following game when we played at Yokota. That was my last game. In fact, the following day was when I was leaving Japan for good. Although we ended up with a tie on that game, I sometimes blame myself for us not winning that game. That was the only game we did not win that year and I sometimes have nightmares about playing football. I went from Best Defensive Back one year to Football Loser the next.
